Fort Worth campus student receives William Worth Scholarship

Earlier this fall, Columbia College-Fort Worth student and Petty Officer 2nd Class Barbara Walker was a recipient of the $500 William Worth Scholarship. Barbara has enjoyed her time in the Navy and is working toward her bachelor's degree at Columbia College:
"I was born in Heidelberg, Germany. I was an Army brat. My mother and father both served proudly in the Army. During high school I was a part of the J.R.O.T.C program. Being part of the military was and is something that I’ve always loved and count myself lucky to be a part of.
When I was of age, I actually joined the Navy behind my mother’s back. My mother wasn’t quite ready for me to leave and I knew the only way I could do it was to do it without her knowing. I joined in February of 2008. I wanted to be different from my past generations so I decided that the Navy would be the perfect opportunity. Plus, I don’t remember the last time that the Army has beat the Navy in football.
Joining the Navy
is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. I’ve traveled to more places
than I’ve ever thought possible, my favorite place having to be Dubai. I’ve
been to Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea and Thailand.
To say that I am blessed is an understatement. I am one more semester away from receiving my bachelor’s degree and I plan on rolling right into the criminal justice master’s program. Once I have my bachelor's, I will be applying for the Officer Candidate School program, so wish me luck."
Instructors from the Fort Worth campus contribute to the scholarship fund, and two to three students are awarded the scholarship each academic year, which can be applied toward tuition and books. To be eligible, applicants must have a mimimum 3.0 GPA, have completed at least 18 credit hours with Columbia College and 12 credit hours at the Forth Worth campus, submit a 350-word essay describing what patriotism through community or military service means to them, and provide documentation of community or military service.
