The
Phil Davis Scholarship is named in honor of a former student, Gerald ‘Phil’
Davis and was started in 1996 by his wife, Barbara Davis, and Dr. Mary
Luetkemeyer, an English professor at the Lake campus at the time. Davis is long
remembered for his dedication to the community and the pursuit of his
education. He volunteered with the local fire department and also devoted many
hours of his time to fellow students. Davis passed away from cancer only a few
classes short of obtaining his bachelor’s degree.
“Relay
for Life of Miller County is honored to be a recipient of the funds from the
Columbia College golf tournament,” Relay for Life of Miller County Event Chair
Lorie Kiso said. “This is a wonderful way to remember Phil Davis. He was a
kind, hard-working, giving man and the giving continues through this
tournament. We know the American Cancer Society will be able to use these funds
to help others.”
Each year, more than four million people in more than 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the Relay For Life movement, which benefits the American Cancer Society (ACS).
“We
save lives and create more birthdays by helping you stay well,
helping you get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.” said D'Arcy Crane, ACS Staff Partner
Several prizes were presented
following the tournament with the team of Mike Cochran, Joe Cochran, Casey
Piggot and Andrew Keeth shooting a 56 on the day taking home the top prize.

Interested parties that would like to be part of next year’s tourney can
contact Community and Alumni Relations Coordinator Sam Fleury at sfleury@ccis.edu.
“The
Lake campus Alumni Affinity Committee appreciates the outstanding support we
received from the Lake of the Ozarks community with this being our first year
of putting together the tournament,” Fleury said. “The weather, golf and
camaraderie were amazing and we are excited to be able to help these two
outstanding causes fulfill their missions of helping others through education
and cancer research and awareness.”
