Safety and security: help Columbia College–Kansas City prevent campus crime

To comply with federal guidelines regarding the dissemination of crime statistics at postsecondary institutions, Columbia CollegeKansas City has developed the 2011 Safety and Security Report for the campus. The following is an excerpt from the report:
“Prevention efforts can be effective in reducing the opportunities for criminal activity.  The following list is a compilation of tips devoted to crime intervention.
  • Do not hesitate to call police or notify a member of the college staff when confronted. Do not prop open outside doors.
  • Do not leave personal property unattended in the classrooms, computer labs, restrooms or common areas.
  • Report suspicious individuals to a member of the college staff if the office is open or to Building Security after the office closes.
  • During nighttime hours, do not walk outside alone. Contact Building Security if you would like to be escorted to your vehicle.
  • During nighttime hours, approach your car with caution.  Be alert and don’t speak on your cellphone until you enter your vehicle.
  • When approaching your car, always have your keys ready to unlock the door immediately.
  • Familiarize yourself with the locations of all phones and building exits.
  • Remove valuables from your car and always lock your car.
  • Engrave or otherwise mark your valuables to ensure proper identity.
  • Beware of your surroundings and what is going on around you.”
