Scholarship winners at Columbia College–Lake County

Pursuing a college degree is a noble endeavor, but it comes with costs. Some of these costs are intangible, such as time spent studying rather than relaxing with your family, while others are more concrete. To help offset the financial burden of pursuing a degree Columbia College offers several scholarship opportunities throughout the year. This year, the Lake County campus was proud to award five separate $500 scholarships to four very deserving students.

Olena Fischer, Terrence Fitzpatrick and Sandra Rapey were each selected as recipients of the Lake County Honors Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded each year to three students at the Lake County campus who have earned at least 24 hours with Columbia College, and have maintained at least a 3.75 GPA. Wendy Dumont and Sandra Rapey were selected as two of 28 recipients of the Frank S. Westling Memorial Scholarship. This college-wide scholarship is named in honor of Westling, who was a highly decorated infantry officer and former dean of the college’s Extended Studies Division, now Adult Higher Education.

Before joining the college, Westling served in the U.S. Army for 31 years, fighting in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star medals and earned parachutist and glider badges. During the Vietnam War, he commanded the Army’s 4th Psychological Operations Group in Saigon and retired as colonel.
