guests in the Queen Salon of the Queen Mary.

On May 15, the Los Alamitos campus recognized the outstanding accomplishments of its civilian and military students and military family members in a commencement ceremony befitting this grand occasion. This annual graduation ceremony was held at a central location for the students who attend classes at San Pedro in Los Angeles Harbor and at the Los Alamitos campus. This location was steeped in history, tradition and service to our country in a time during world wars. The Queen Mary has long since retired from service as a troop transport ship during the war, but she served grandly as the graduates walked the decks and marched proudly across the stage to receive their diplomas where royalty and military dignitaries once walked. The crowd of families and guests exceeded 200 as they were treated to a luncheon with the traditional Columbia College cake. The Queen’s Salon looked stately in Columbia College blue and white while the attendees were entertained by a pianist and a live performance of the national anthem. The graduates celebrated their achievements, earning one master’s, 10 bachelor’s and 13 associate degrees. This mix of graduates included 19 Los Alamitos students, three graduates from the San Diego campus and two from the Online Campus.

The commencement began with the traditional processional. Director Carl David was able to serve as master of ceremonies while Eric Cunningham, associate dean for adult higher education for Columbia College, was in attendance to confer the degrees on behalf of President Gerald Brouder. Retired Maj. Gen. Paul Mock, a former commanding general of forces at Joint Forces Training Base, where the campus has offices and classrooms, was the inspiring commencement speaker. Dr. Sutter Fox, adjunct faculty and retired Coast Guard captain, gave the invocation and benediction. All were treated to an alumni charge by Curtis Jackson, class of 2008, who earned his master’s degree as a member of this class of 2010. The majestic skyline and harbor at Long Beach provided a stunning backdrop for families, guests and faculty to capture the momentous occasion in photos on the deck of the Queen Mary.
