Faculty Focus – David Haworth, management instructor

A new instructor will be teaching at Columbia College–Lake County this spring. If you are thinking about taking Management 361 Human Resources Management in March, take a few minutes to learn more about David Haworth:

Haworth’s experience as a human resources leader is broad and multi-faceted, including: staffing, human resources shared services, compensation, benefits, employee relations and education and development. During his more than 16 years of human resources experience, he had the privilege of serving a variety of corporate office customers, including market leaders in insurance, human resources outsourcing and commercial printing.

Haworth achieved his MBA in 2008 at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management with a specialization in organizational behavior. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Speech Communication at Illinois State University while he was employed full-time at State Farm Insurance Companies’ corporate headquarters. As a human resources representative, he had the pleasure and responsibility of serving more than 1,000 internal customers from a wide range of business units such as public affairs, administrative services, legal, finance and corporate agency.

He has demonstrated continuous improvement throughout his career by earning the following designations: senior professionalism in human resources (SPHR) from the Society for Human Resources Management, certification in general insurance from the Insurance Institute of America (IIA), competent toastmaster (CTM) and served as chapter president in Toastmasters International and completed a certification in presentation skills from Decker Communications.

As a human resources director at two private companies, Haworth accomplished the daunting task of orchestrating the start-up of both human resources departments. His initiatives included incorporating human resources best practices in the development of policies for employees and managers, performance assessment/performance awareness programs, compensation models, internal salary ranges, job family descriptions, harassment and code of conduct. In addition, he negotiated benefit insurance options and costs.

Haworth, and his wife, Patty, reside in the Libertyville area. They have two sons and four grandsons. In addition to spending time with family, he enjoys running, cross-country skiing and attending Green Bay Packer games.
