Faculty Focus – Barry Phelps, management instructor

A new instructor will be teaching at Columbia College–Lake County this spring. If you are thinking about taking Management 375 Labor Relations in March, take a few minutes to learn more about Barry Phelps:

Phelps has operated his own human resources management consulting firm, Eagle Associates, since 1995. As president of the company in this entrepreneurial venture, he works with various small to mid-size organizations on both a project and retainer basis to provide professional human resource management services. He also does executive coaching and personal development coaching with individual and corporate clients.

He works with organizations and individuals in both the private and public sectors. In the recent past, Phelps held the position of vice president, human resources at Shell Vacations LLC, a privately-held vacation ownership company based in Northbrook, Ill. Prior to that, he was the vice president, human resources for Imperial Eastman, a mid-size manufacturing company headquartered in the Chicago area.

Earlier in his career, now spanning more than 40 years to date, Phelps held numerous human resources management positions with a variety of small, medium and large organizations, primarily in manufacturing and service industries, in both union and non-union environments. Early in his professional career, Captain Phelps served as a personnel officer in the U.S. Air Force with the 379th Combat Support Group during the Vietnam Era.

He is an adjunct faculty member at the Keller Graduate School of Management, where he teaches numerous human resources management courses for their various master’s degree programs at several centers throughout the Chicago and southeastern Wisconsin areas. He is also an adjunct faculty member with DeVry University where he teaches a variety of undergraduate courses in business, ethics, management, psychology and human resources management.

In the recent past, Phelps served as an adjunct faculty member at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management, where he taught the human resource management course in their MBA program. He previously taught undergraduate personnel management courses as an adjunct faculty member at the combined branches of Indiana University and Purdue University in Fort Wayne. He also served as the interim executive director and a volunteer career counselor at the Barrington Career Center for a number of years.

Phelps received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Iowa, with a major in management and industrial relations. He earned his Master of Science in Industrial Relations (MSIR) from Loyola University of Chicago, where he majored in personnel management. He is also a certified professional consultant (CPC) and a certified seminar leader (CSL).
