Stephen Stephany receives Frazier Moon award

Stephen Stephany, director of Columbia College–Lake County and the northern region, has been named Frazier Moon Administrator of the Year.

Stephany was presented the award during a luncheon held Sept. 18 in conjunction with the Adult Higher Education (AHE) Directors Conference at the home campus in Columbia, Mo.

“What makes this award so special is that it comes from fellow campus directors and college staff who work closely with the campus directors on a regular basis,” said René Massey, assistant dean for Adult Higher Education. “It’s an award from peers.”

The award recognizes campus directors who exemplify the virtues of the late Frazier Moon, a former Columbia College dean who played a significant role in the advancement of the extended studies division, now known as AHE. Moon was known to fight for what was right for the division, for the people who worked for him and for the college.

"I was very surprised to receive this award. I think there are other directors more deserving of this recognition," said Stephany. "However, upon reflection, I do not see this as an individual award, but as a team award. It is a testimonial of the outstanding service the Lake County staff provides to the college and our students on a daily basis."

Stephany became director of the Lake County campus in 2003; director of the Illinois region in 2005; and director of the northern region, which includes the college's two New York campuses, in July 2008.

Before joining Columbia College, Stephany served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He then taught at North Park and National-Louis universities; he was selected as Instructor of the Year at National-Louis University in 2003.

Stephany received a master's degree in business administration from Gonzaga University (Spokane, Wash.) in 1980 and a bachelor's degree in business administration from Regis University (Denver) in 1970.

His name is engraved on a plaque displayed in the AHE office in Columbia, Mo. He also received a memento for his desk and a monetary award.
