Lake of the Ozarks campus holds seminar for first-year teachers

Columbia College–Lake of the Ozarks held a seminar for beginning teachers on Oct. 7. Sixteen first-year teachers from surrounding schools attended the day-long workshop. The state of Missouri requires all first-year teachers to complete this training to sustain their certification.

College instructors Laurie Sybert, Gary Carrender, Susan Bowden and Gary Carrender led sessions regarding classroom management, lesson design and modifications, student and teacher evaluations, parent communications and teacher professional development. The new teachers had the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and acquire practical approaches to resolve problems they have encountered in their first few months of teaching.

The workshop not only provided solutions for the teachers’ present classroom concerns, but also promoted the development of networks with other teachers to address future classroom concerns. Seminar participants came from a variety of instructional areas, including early childhood, primary and elementary classrooms; junior high and high school core subjects; special education; K-12 art, physical education and library. An excellent day of discussing learning was enjoyed by all participants and presenters.
